Previously: When Chloe's cellmate whispered a terrifying warning just before the prison alarms blared, they realized their only escape lay in exposing the corrupt man who framed them.

The Price of Truth

Just as Miller lunged forward, the external sirens of the prison began to wail, drowning out the internal lockdown alarm. The heavy, unmistakable sound of multiple police cruisers screeched to a halt in the courtyard below. Marcus frowned, his smug composure cracking as he glanced toward the barred window. "Miller, what is that? Did you call backup?"

"No, sir," Miller stammered, his face turning pale under the spinning red lights. "That’s not our department. Those are state troopers and FBI vehicles."

Chloe looked back at Mia, who finally let out a shaky breath, a triumphant smile breaking through her terror.

"I didn't just find the chip, Chloe," Mia whispered, loud enough for Marcus to hear. "Yesterday, in the computer lab, I set up an automated dead-man's switch. If I didn't enter my daily inmate code by 9:00 PM, the entire digital file was programmed to be emailed directly to the federal prosecutor and the governor's office. It's 9:05 PM, Marcus. They already have everything."

Before Marcus could react, the heavy iron gate at the end of the corridor was thrown open. A team of armed federal agents, led by a stern-faced female prosecutor, marched down the hall. They bypassed the prison guards completely, heading straight for cell 104.

"Detective Marcus Vance," the lead agent boomed, drawing his weapon. "Hands where we can see them. You are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, and the wrongful imprisonment of Chloe Bennet and Mia Sterling."

Marcus was slammed against the cold concrete wall, the very wall he had used to cage Chloe. The silver handcuffs clicked around his wrists, a beautiful, poetic sound. Two months later, Chloe and Mia walked out of the prison gates into the warm morning sun, free women with a substantial settlement and their names fully cleared.

Sometimes, the very walls built to bury your truth become the foundation of your ultimate freedom.
