Previously: When General Thomas mocked Captain Jessica's abilities in a dusty outpost, he didn't expect her to take the shot of a lifetime—or that it would expose his darkest secrets.

Justice in the Dust

The briefing room was tense the following morning. General Thomas sat at the center of the panel, flanked by several high-ranking officers, including a stern-faced presiding colonel. Thomas looked confident, holding a stack of papers that supposedly detailed Jessica's history of "reckless behavior" and insubordination.

"Captain Jessica has shown a flagrant disregard for the chain of command," Thomas stated, looking around the room. "Her actions yesterday were a dangerous stunt, and I recommend her immediate dishonorable discharge."

The colonel turned to Jessica. "Do you have anything to say in your defense, Captain?"

Jessica stood tall, holding a small encrypted data drive. "Yes, Colonel. I would like to submit the telemetry data from my rifle’s scope, which automatically uploaded to the defense network during the incident."

Thomas scoffed, but the colonel nodded, gesturing for her to play the file. The main screen lit up, showing the high-definition thermal footage of the enemy combatants locking their missile onto the base. More importantly, the telemetry overlay displayed a history of automated warnings that Jessica’s system had sent to the command tent over the previous forty-eight hours—warnings that had been manually rejected and deleted by General Thomas’s personal terminal.

The room went dead silent. The colonel’s eyes narrowed as he looked from the screen to the pale, sweating general. "General Thomas, it appears you not only ignored active threats to this outpost, but you also tried to frame the officer who saved your life to cover up your negligence."

Thomas opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Within minutes, the colonel ordered Thomas to be stripped of his command and escorted to the brig. Turning to Jessica, the colonel smiled warmly. "Excellent shooting, Captain. Your vigilance saved us all. Your promotion is already being processed."

Jessica saluted, finally feeling the weight of the dust lift from her shoulders. She had proven that no matter how hard they try to bury the truth, true competence and courage will always find a way to shine through.
