He reached into his collar and pulled out a matching gold chain from beneath his shirt. At the end of it hung the other half of the broken heart pendant. They fit together perfectly.

"I've carried my half for fifteen years, believing my sister was dead," Daniel said, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and rage. He turned his piercing gaze toward Victoria. "Your mother told me Olivia died in the car crash that killed our mother. She told me there was nothing left for me here, which is why I took my inheritance and left the state."

Olivia gasped, the horrifying truth clicking into place. After Daniel had run away as a teenager to escape their abusive stepfather, their stepmother had systematically blocked all communication, eventually telling Daniel that Olivia had perished in the accident to ensure he would never return to claim his share of the family estate.
