Previously: When Nicole's husband Brian turned his rage on their newborn baby, she thought she was completely trapped. But a sudden knock on the door changed their lives forever.

The Flight into the Dark

The moment Brian slammed the bedroom door behind him, Nicole’s terror transformed into a cold, desperate resolve. She knew she could not stay in this house for another night. Waiting until the heavy silence of the house suggested Brian had retreated to the guest room, she quietly stood up. Moving like a ghost, she packed a small duffel bag with Leo’s essentials—diapers, formula, and warm blankets. She didn't care about her own belongings; her only priority was protecting her son.

As she crept down the dark hallway, holding Leo tightly against her chest, a floorboard creaked beneath her foot. Instantly, the overhead lights flooded the corridor. Brian was standing at the end of the hall, his arms crossed, a mocking sneer on his lips.

"Where do you think you're going with my son, Nicole?" Brian asked, his voice dangerously low.

"We're leaving, Brian," Nicole said, her voice shaking but determined. "You need help, and I won't let you hurt Leo."

Brian lunged forward, grabbing her arm with a crushing grip. Nicole struggled, trying to shield the baby as Brian tried to wrench the duffel bag from her hand. Just as panic threatened to overwhelm her, the front door lock shattered with a loud bang. Nicole’s brother, Ethan, burst into the house. He had been trying to reach Nicole all evening, and his gut told him something was terribly wrong.

"Get your hands off her right now!" Ethan roared, stepping between Brian and Nicole.

Brian stepped back, his expression shifting from rage to cold calculation. He knew he couldn't beat Ethan, but he had other weapons. "Take her," Brian sneered. "But the moment you leave, I'm calling the police. I'll report a kidnapping, hire the best lawyers in the state, and make sure she never sees this baby again."

Nicole’s heart sank. Brian had the money and connections to carry out his threat. But Ethan simply pulled out his phone, a grim smile on his face.
