Previously: When State Trooper Thomas Vance’s loyal K9 partner Buster barked at his casket and ran to his widow, everyone thought it was grief. But the dog held a secret that changed everything.

My breath caught in my throat. Thomas had always been a meticulous investigator, constantly warning me that his work on the county drug task force made him a target. "If anything ever happens to me, Sarah, trust Buster," he had whispered to me once. Now, holding the cold piece of metal in my palm, those words echoed in my mind like a warning from beyond the grave.

A Voice From the Grave

Excusing myself from the pew, I hurried toward the back of the hall and slipped into the quiet of the ladies' restroom. With shaking fingers, I inserted the micro-SD card into my phone’s external reader. A single audio file appeared, dated the night of Thomas's fatal crash. I pressed play, pressing the speaker tightly against my ear so no one else could hear.

"I know what you've been doing, Luke," Thomas's recorded voice said, cutting through the static. "You've been leaking our patrol routes to the cartel. I found the modified logs on your terminal. It's over."

A heavy silence followed on the recording, followed by the cold, mocking voice of Deputy Luke Carter, Thomas's closest colleague and the man who had delivered the news of his death to my doorstep.

"You always had to be the hero, Thomas," Luke sneered. "But heroes don't last long in this county."

Then came the sound of a violent struggle, the screeching of tires, and a horrifying crash that abruptly ended the transmission. Tears of rage and terror spilled down my cheeks. My husband hadn't died in an accident; he had been murdered by his own partner. I wiped my face and stepped out of the restroom, trying to appear calm. But as the door swung shut behind me, a shadow blocked my path. It was Luke, standing in his formal uniform, his eyes cold and calculating.

"You look like you've seen a ghost, Sarah," he whispered, his eyes darting to the phone clenched in my hand. "And I think you have something that belongs to me."
