Previously: Ten years after her fiancé vanished, Admiral Elizabeth Vance faces him at a grand cathedral wedding, uncovering a heartbreaking sacrifice that changes everything she knew about her past.

A Heartbreaking Sacrifice

The moment the ceremony concluded, Elizabeth bypassed the receiving line and slipped out of the cathedral's side exit. She found Thomas waiting in the secluded stone courtyard, the shadow of the gothic spires stretching across the grass. The crisp autumn air did nothing to cool the fire burning in her chest. For a decade, she had carried the humiliation of being abandoned. Now, the man who had broken her stood yards away.

"Why are you here, Thomas?"

she demanded, her voice tight with a mixture of anger and raw grief. She tried to project the cold authority of an Admiral, but the facade was cracking.

"After ten years of silence, you just show up at my sister's wedding? You left a folded flag on your bed and disappeared. You owe me an explanation."

Thomas looked at her, his eyes swimming with a sorrow so deep it took her breath away. He reached slowly into his breast pocket and pulled out a faded, official military document, its edges worn from years of handling. He held it out to her.

"I didn't leave you because I wanted to, Elizabeth,"

he said softly.

"I was forced out. Your father, General Vance, gave me a choice."

Elizabeth gasped, her hand freezing mid-air. Her father had been a legendary war hero, the man who had guided her career until his death two years ago. Thomas explained that after their failed tactical mission in the Pacific, the General discovered a critical error. To protect Elizabeth’s rising career, Thomas had agreed to take the sole blame, accept a quiet discharge, and vanish. If he refused, the General promised to court-martial Elizabeth and destroy her life.

Elizabeth stared at the document, the truth crashing down like a tidal wave. Thomas had sacrificed his entire life and career to save hers. But as she looked up, tears spilling over her lashes, Thomas’s face grew pale and urgent.

"But that's not all,"

Thomas whispered.

"Your father's old rivals have found the original unredacted files. They are planning to release them tomorrow to strip you of your rank. I came to warn you—and to give you the key to the one safe-deposit box that can save you."
