The moment the ceremony concluded, Elizabeth bypassed the receiving line and slipped out of the cathedral's side exit. She found Thomas waiting in the secluded stone courtyard, the shadow of the gothic spires stretching across the grass. The crisp autumn air did nothing to cool the fire burning in her chest. For a decade, she had carried the humiliation of being abandoned. Now, the man who had broken her stood yards away.

"Why are you here, Thomas?"

To protect Elizabeth’s rising career, Thomas had agreed to take the sole blame, accept a quiet discharge, and vanish. If he refused, the General promised to court-martial Elizabeth and destroy her life.
