Previously: When Chloe's mother-in-law violently attacked her in the nursery, her husband Tyler stepped in. But the confrontation was just the beginning of a dark family secret that would change everything.

The Box of Secrets

The police were called, but without physical marks other than a tender scalp, they advised us to file for a restraining order. Tyler was devastated. He couldn't understand why his mother, who had always been overbearing, had suddenly snapped into physical violence. Hoping to find some answers and retrieve the spare key she refused to return, Tyler drove over to Martha’s house while she was reportedly at a local clinic receiving a psychiatric evaluation. He expected to find a messy house; instead, he found a meticulously organized archive of his entire life.

As Tyler searched her home office, he noticed a heavy oak desk drawer that was locked. Using a paperclip, he managed to pop the simple lock. Inside lay a dusty metal lockbox. When he pried it open, he didn't find old family photos. Instead, he found a faded manila envelope containing a birth certificate and a set of legal adoption papers from thirty years ago. As Tyler read the names, his breath hitched. The birth mother listed was not Martha. It was Sarah Evans—Martha's younger sister who had tragically passed away in a car accident when Tyler was just an infant.

Even more shocking were the adoption papers. They were crudely forged, with signatures that didn't match the official state registry seals. Tyler realized with a sinking heart that Martha had stolen him. She had fabricated his entire upbringing to keep him as her own, hiding the truth of his maternal heritage. He immediately called me, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and terror. "Chloe, my entire life is a lie," he whispered over the line. "Martha isn't my mother. She took me after Sarah died."

Before I could fully process his words, a cold draft swept through our hallway. I heard the distinct click of the front door unlocking. I froze, holding Leo tightly against my chest. Martha had not gone to the clinic. She was standing in our living room, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker, her eyes completely devoid of sanity.
