Previously: When Maya discovers a shocking secret in her late mother’s safe box, she confronts a wealthy patriarch to reclaim her brother—only to face an agonizing decision.

The Cost of Silence

Maya took a step closer to Arthur, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Your son?" she spat, the word tasting like poison. "He is my brother, Arthur. You bought him from a desperate woman who couldn't afford to keep us both fed. You forced her to sign away her rights, and you threatened to ruin her if she ever spoke the truth."

Leo stepped away from the graffiti-covered wall, his hands dropping from his hoodie pockets. His brow furrowed in deep confusion. "What is she talking about, Dad? Who is this girl? What does she mean, bought me?"

Arthur finally turned, his face a mask of cold, calculating authority. He ignored the boy entirely, focusing his piercing gaze on Maya. Reaching into his heavy coat, he pulled out a thick, white envelope and held it out between them.

"Inside this envelope is a cashier's check for five hundred thousand dollars," Arthur said, his voice low and dangerous. "It is more than enough to pay off your mother's outstanding medical bills and buy yourself a comfortable life. All you have to do is sign a non-disclosure agreement. You walk away, and you never contact us again."

Maya stared at the envelope. It represented absolute financial freedom—an end to the grinding poverty that had defined her entire life. But looking past Arthur, she saw Leo. The boy's face had gone pale, his eyes wide with a sudden, horrifying realization. He was looking at Maya, then at the envelope, and finally at the man he had called father his entire life.

"Is it true?" Leo’s voice cracked, sounding incredibly young and vulnerable in the cold night air. "Am I... am I not your son?"

Arthur’s jaw tightened. "Leo, go back to the car. This is business."

"No!" Leo shouted, his anger breaking through his shock. "I'm not going anywhere until someone tells me what is happening!"
