Previously: After fifteen years of believing his mother had abandoned him for money, a wealthy young man discovers the heartbreaking truth on a busy city street corner.

The Corporate Shadow

The tender moment was shattered by the screech of tires. A sleek, black SUV pulled up directly to the curb, blocking the golden sunlight. Two men in sharp, identical business suits stepped out, carrying clipboards and looking at the food cart with open disdain. They were field agents from Vanguard Development—the multi-billion-dollar real estate conglomerate that Jonathan had inherited just months prior.

Because Jonathan rarely visited the field offices and preferred to keep a low profile, the agents had no idea who he was. One of them, a man with a sneering expression, stepped up to the cart and slammed his hand onto the metal surface, ignoring Jonathan entirely.

"Time is up, lady," the man barked. "We told you yesterday that your permit has been revoked. You have ten minutes to pack up this cart and sign the voluntary eviction waiver, or we'll have the city bulldoze it."

Susan shrank back, her hands trembling as she clutched her blue apron. "Please," she pleaded, her voice cracking. "I've paid my fees. This cart is my entire life. It is the only way my son will ever know where to find me."

The agent laughed coldly, tapping the clipboard. "Your son isn't coming, and even if he did, he can't stop a corporate acquisition. Sign the paper."

Jonathan felt a cold, dangerous fury rising within him. He stepped between the agent and his mother, his gaze icy. He reached out, snatched the legal document from the clipboard, and ripped it in half before dropping the pieces into the street.

"What do you think you're doing?" the agent yelled, stepping forward aggressively. "You just destroyed a corporate document. I'll have you arrested!"

Jonathan slowly pulled out his phone, his eyes locked onto the agent's. "I suggest you call your supervisor," Jonathan said softly. "And tell him that the CEO of Vanguard is standing right here."
