The agent scoffed, but as Jonathan dialed the direct, private line of the regional director, the man's expression began to falter. When the director answered on the first ring, Jonathan put the call on speakerphone. "This is Jonathan Vance," he said, his voice cutting through the street noise like a blade. "I am standing at the corner of 5th and Elm. Your field agents are currently attempting to illegally evict a vendor named Susan."

The voice on the other end gasped, instantly turning apologetic and terrified. "Mr. Vance! I—I apologize, we were just clearing the zone for the new luxury high-rise—"

"The project is canceled," Jonathan interrupted coldly. "In fact, I want the entire block rezoned. We are going to build a permanent, covered market for local vendors, and Susan will have the lifetime deed to the central plot. Jonathan turned back to his mother, his eyes filling with tears as he reached out to take her hands. "Grandfather lied to us both," he whispered. "He told me you left. But I know the truth now. I'm never letting anyone hurt you again."

Susan pulled him into a tight, tearful embrace, the scent of jasmine rice wrapping around them like a protective blanket. For the first time in fifteen years, Jonathan was truly home. Sometimes, the most valuable empires we build are the ones that bring us back to where we started.
