Previously: When seventeen-year-old Justin found a hidden folder in his father's study, he thought it was a mistake. But Robert's violent reaction proved the dark truth was real.

The Web of Deceit

Helen rushed to Justin's side, wrapping a protective arm around his shoulders. "Robert, what is wrong with you?" she cried, her voice trembling. "He's your son!"

"He is not my son," Robert sneered, the words slipping out with a cold bitterness that made Helen's blood run cold. "And he never was."

Justin shook his head, pulling a birth certificate and a series of bank statements from the folder. "He's right, Mom," Justin said, his voice shaking. "But not the way he means. Look at these." He handed the papers to Helen. As her eyes scanned the documents, the world seemed to tilt on its axis. There were bank transfers from Robert's personal account to a private investigator, and court documents detailing a fraudulent bankruptcy case against Arthur Pendelton—Helen's first love, whom she believed had died in a tragic car accident seventeen years ago.

"Arthur is alive," Helen whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "But you told me... you showed me the police report."
"It was forged, Mom," Justin explained, glaring at Robert. "He paid off a corrupt officer to falsify the report. Then he used his accounting firm to systematically ruin Arthur's business, threatening him with prison if he ever contacted you again. He bought our life."

Robert took a step back, his defensive wall beginning to crumble, replaced by a desperate, cornered fury. "I did what I had to do!" Robert shouted, his eyes wide. "Arthur was a penniless dreamer! I gave you a real life! I gave this boy a future! You think he would have gone to prep school on a mechanic's salary?"

Before anyone could answer, the front door clicked open once more. A tall man with graying hair and the exact same deep gray eyes as Justin stepped into the warmth of the living room. It was Arthur. He looked older, tired, but his gaze was fixed on Helen with a lifetime of unspoken longing.
