Previously: When William's snobbish wife demanded his elderly mother Dorothy leave their party, William chose his wife. But when financial ruin knocked on his door, William realized he made a terrible mistake.

A Lesson in Justice

Dorothy calmly took the document from Stephanie's hands, looking down at the legal jargon. A slow, serene smile spread across her face, which only seemed to infuriate Stephanie further.

"You think you've cornered me,"
Dorothy said softly, her voice carrying a weight that made William stop weeping and look up.
"But you forgot one very important detail about the house you are trying to save."

Dorothy stepped back inside her foyer and gestured to her own attorney, who had been waiting in the study. He stepped forward, holding a deed.

"When I gave you the money to buy that house, William,"
Dorothy explained, her eyes locked onto her son's.
"I didn't give it as a gift. I had your father's lawyer structure it as a primary lien on the property. I am the primary mortgage holder. The bank isn't foreclosing on you—I am."

The color drained from Stephanie's face as the reality of the situation set in. The legal documents they had brought were useless; Dorothy already owned the debt on their home. She was not going to pay them a single cent. Instead, she was taking back the only thing she had left them.

"You threw me out in the cold to preserve your pride,"
Dorothy said, looking at William one last time.
"Now, you will learn what it truly means to build a life from nothing. The foreclosure goes through on Friday. You have until then to pack your bags."
She shut the door, leaving them standing in the quiet afternoon air, finally free from the burden of their greed. Dorothy realized that sometimes, the greatest act of love a mother can show is letting her child face the consequences of his own actions.
