Previously: After her son Robert chose his demanding wife over his own mother, Helen was cast out into a cold rainstorm. But when Robert's life crumbled, he made a desperate call he would regret.

The Price of Betrayal

For a long moment, the only sound in the small apartment was the ticking of the wall clock. Melissa looked at Helen with desperate, pleading eyes, expecting her mother-in-law to do what she had always done—sacrifice herself to save her son.

"Just sign the restructuring papers, Helen,"
Melissa pleaded, holding out a pen.
"It will give Robert more time to pay it off. We can get through this."

Helen looked at the pen, then at the forged signature on the document. A strange, calm strength washed over her. The fear vanished, replaced by a fierce determination. She picked up her phone and dialed the police.

"Yes, hello,"
Helen said clearly into the receiver.
"I would like to report a case of identity theft and financial fraud. The perpetrator is my son, Robert."

Melissa gasped, dropping the pen.

"Are you crazy? He is your son! They will arrest him!"
she screamed, grabbing the papers and rushing out of the apartment in a panic. But it was too late. Helen met with the police and the bank's fraud division the very next day, presenting years of handwriting samples and proof of her residency at the motel on the night the loan was finalized.

The legal system moved swiftly. Robert was arrested and charged with grand larceny and forgery. To save himself from a lengthy prison sentence, he was forced to liquidate all his assets, including the beautiful suburban home he had cherished more than his own mother. Melissa left him the moment the money ran out, filing for divorce and leaving Robert to face the ruins of his life alone.

On the day the house was sold at auction, Helen stood across the street, watching her son pack his belongings into cardboard boxes. He looked up and saw her. For a moment, there was a spark of hope in his eyes, but Helen simply turned her back on him. She had used her late husband's actual trust fund to purchase a beautiful retirement villa by the sea, a place where she would never have to worry about a storm again. True family is built on love and respect, and those who trade their blood for greed will always find themselves locked out in the cold.
