Previously: When David’s young son Toby walked up to Maya, the ranch's most dangerous, chained Rottweiler, David feared the worst. But what happened next uncovered a deep family secret.

David knelt beside his son, his eyes darting between the peaceful dog and the old leather collar Toby was holding. It was Thomas's old dog collar, retrieved from a forgotten trunk in the attic. Tucked inside a hidden slit in the leather was a folded, yellowed letter. David unfolded it with trembling hands.

The Brother's Confession

The letter was written in Thomas’s hurried, anxious handwriting. As David read, the puzzle pieces of his brother's final, paranoid months began to fall into place. Thomas hadn't been losing his mind; he had been running for his life.

"David, if you're reading this, I'm already gone,"
the letter began.
"Maya isn't crazy. She’s trained to guard what’s buried beneath the southwest corner of the barn. It’s the ledger. The evidence of what the Syndicate did. They will come for it, David. Do not let them find it, or they will destroy everything we love."

Just as David finished reading the chilling warning, the sound of tires crunching on gravel shattered the evening quiet. A sleek, black SUV pulled into the ranch’s driveway. Two men in dark suits stepped out, their faces obscured by the twilight shadows.

David quickly ushered Toby and Maya behind the barn door.

"Stay here, Toby. Keep her quiet,"
he whispered, his blood running cold.

David walked out to meet the strangers. The taller man stepped forward, a cold, professional smile on his face.

"Good evening, Mr. Vance. We're looking for something that belonged to your late brother. We know it's on this property. Make it easy on yourself, and tell us where it is."

David felt a bead of sweat roll down his neck. He knew what they were capable of, and he knew they wouldn't leave empty-handed.
