Previously: When Clara’s stepmother Eleanor threw her out of the family mansion, she thought she lost everything. But a loyal executor stepped in with a red binder that turned the tables completely.

The Hidden Ledger

The silence that followed my question was deafening. Eleanor’s triumphant smirk vanished, replaced by a mask of pure fury. She looked from the red binder to Richard, her eyes narrowing into slits. She stood up so quickly her chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor.

"This is an outright fabrication!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with desperation. "You expect us to believe this garbage? You and this senile old lawyer forged these papers! I will have you both thrown in prison for fraud!"

Richard did not flinch. Instead, he stepped forward and opened his leather briefcase, pulling out a thick stack of bank statements and financial ledgers. He threw them onto the mahogany table right next to the red binder. The papers scattered across the polished wood, revealing rows of highlighted numbers and unauthorized wire transfers.

"I suggest you watch your tongue, Eleanor," Richard said, his voice deadly calm. "These are the forensic audits of the family business from the past two years. While Arthur was confined to his bed, struggling for his life, someone was siphoning millions of dollars into offshore accounts. The digital signatures on these transfers belong to you and your son."

My half-brother’s face drained of color, his hands trembling as he stared at the incriminating documents. Eleanor, however, refused to back down. She leaned over the table, her face inches from mine, her breath hot and angry.

"You think you’ve won, Clara?" she whispered, her voice venomous. "I have the best lawyers in the state. I will tie this up in probate court for the next decade. I will drag your father’s name through the mud and ruin his legacy before I let you take a single dime of this estate. You will be penniless by the time the trial even begins."

The sheer malice in her eyes made my blood run cold. She was willing to destroy everything my father had built, his entire life's work, just to satisfy her greed and keep me from my inheritance. I looked at Richard, my heart pounding in my chest. We had the deed, and we had the proof of their theft, but Eleanor’s threat of a never-ending legal battle was real. She had the connections to ruin us. I felt the ground slipping away again, wondering if my father's plan had a fatal flaw.
