Previously: When Rebecca’s wealthy parents disowned her for choosing a military career over high society, they thought she would fail. Years later, she walks into their elite gala wearing a Major General’s uniform.

As the formal ceremony transitioned into a reception, the atmosphere remained tense. Rebecca was immediately surrounded by dignitaries and fellow officers, but she kept a watchful eye on the VIP table. Sure enough, Charles and Beatrice began pushing their way through the crowd, wearing forced, desperate smiles. The elite guests watched in curiosity, whispering about the sudden connection between the prominent Vance family and the newly promoted Major General.

The Hidden Motive

"Rebecca, darling!" Beatrice gasped as she reached her daughter, her voice trembling with a mixture of social panic and sudden greed. "We had no idea you had achieved so much. We are absolutely thrilled. You must come join our table immediately; Senator Sterling is eager to meet you."

Rebecca looked at her mother, her expression cool and unyielding. "It is Major General Vance, Beatrice. And I am here on official business, not to help you climb the social ladder."

Charles stepped forward, his silver hair gleaming under the elegant indoor lighting. He leaned in close, trying to project an aura of paternal warmth, but his eyes were calculating. "Let’s not be hasty, Rebecca. We made mistakes in the past, yes. But family is family. In fact, I have some excellent news. I am prepared to reinstate your full inheritance tonight. I only need you to look over a minor legal matter regarding our family's logistics company. A simple signature from a Major General would clear up a misunderstanding with the Department of Defense."

Rebecca’s blood ran cold. She realized their sudden affection was entirely transactional. The Vance family logistics empire was facing a federal investigation for military contract fraud, and they wanted to use her new rank as a shield to escape prosecution. They hadn't come to apologize; they had come to exploit her.

"You disowned me when I was nothing to you," Rebecca whispered, her voice cutting like glass. "And now you want me to commit treason to save your fortune?"
