Previously: When Special Agent Emily Vance confronted a high-ranking naval officer on a dark tarmac, she thought she was stopping a traitor—until he revealed a devastating family secret.

From the deep shadows of the hangar stepped Colonel Marcus Croft, Emily’s commanding officer and the very man who had assigned her to this apprehension detail. In his hand, he held a silenced pistol, its barrel pointed directly at Emily’s chest. A cold, calculating smile played on his lips.

The Architect of Betrayal

"You always were too thorough, Emily," Croft said, his voice smooth and devoid of any remorse. "I hoped you would just pull the trigger on the 'traitor' and let me clean up the rest. But you had to hesitate."

Emily kept her weapon trained on Croft, her mind racing to connect the pieces. "You set this up. The classified files, the treason charges... it was all you."

Thomas scrambled to his feet, stepping in front of Emily to shield her. "Croft, let her go. She doesn't know anything about the missing cargo. This is between us."

"It was never just between us, Thomas," Croft sneered. "Your daughter's intelligence unit was getting too close to our supply chain. Framing you was the perfect cover. Having her eliminate you was just poetry. Now, both of you are tragic casualties of an airfield accident."

Emily felt a wave of cold fury wash over her. The mentor she had trusted for a decade, the man who had guided her career after her father's "death," was the true traitor. He had used her pain as a weapon to silence the only man who could expose his black-market arms ring.

"You won't walk away from this, Colonel," Emily spat, her eyes narrowing. "My team is securing the perimeter. They'll hear the gunfire."

Croft laughed, a sound that chilled her to the bone. "Your team? You mean my men? Who do you think escorted you here, Emily? They don't take orders from a junior agent. They take orders from the man who pays them."

Thomas glanced back at Emily, his eyes pleading. "When I tell you to run, you run, Emily. I won't lose you twice."
