The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the soft, rhythmic breathing of the sleeping dog. Mark slowly walked down the wooden steps, his boots crunching on the dry dirt. The panic in his eyes had quickly hardened back into the familiar, cold resentment that had driven Leo away years ago.
"What do you think you're doing here, Leo?" Mark asked, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and suppressed emotion. "You think you can just show up after five years and play the hero with a beast that has terrorized this entire valley?"
Leo kept his hand resting gently on Maya's soft fur, refusing to let his father's hostility break the fragile peace. "I came to save her, Dad," Leo replied quietly. "Harry called me. He told me you were planning to have her put down tomorrow because she was 'untameable.' I couldn't let you destroy another life because of your anger."
Mark flinched as if struck, his face twisting in rage. He stepped forward aggressively, reaching for Maya's heavy chain. "She is my property, and she is dangerous! You know nothing about what has happened here!"
But as Mark lunged forward, Maya's eyes snapped open. Sensing the threat to her savior, she stood up instantly, placing her powerful body directly between Leo and his father. She bared her teeth at Mark, letting out a deep, protective growl that shook the air. Mark stumbled backward, shock turning his face pale once more.
"You've turned my own dog against me!" Mark roared, reaching for a heavy leather crop hanging near the porch. "I'll teach both of you who rules this ranch!"
Leo stood up, shielding the dog with his own body. "Stop it, Dad! Look at what you're doing! You're trying to beat the pain out of her just like you tried to beat it out of me. Why do you hate us so much?"
Mark raised the crop, but as he looked into Leo's defiant, tear-filled eyes, his arm froze. A devastating truth, hidden deep within his hardened heart, was finally rising to the surface.
