Within minutes, the wail of sirens filled the air. Two police officers in blue uniforms arrived, quickly followed by an ambulance. As the paramedics began cleaning Leo's wound, the officers started taking our statements. Melissa stood a few feet away, whispering to her daughter, completely unbothered by the chaos she had caused. But the situation escalated further when a black luxury SUV screeched to a halt by the curb.

A man in a business suit jumped out and ran toward Melissa. When he turned around, my breath caught in my throat. It was David, my ex-fiancé. Five years ago, when I told him I was pregnant with Leo, he had packed his bags and vanished, leaving me to face motherhood entirely alone. Now, here he was, putting his arm around Melissa.

David’s eyes met mine, and the color instantly drained from his face.

"Jessica?"

he whispered, his voice shaking. Melissa looked between us, her cold expression twisting into a smug, triumphant smirk.

"Oh, so this is the pathetic ex you told me about,"

she sneered, looking down at my bleeding son.

"David, her kid was bullying our daughter, and then he fell. Now she's trying to get the police to arrest me!"

I watched David, waiting to see if he had a shred of humanity left. He looked at Leo, who possessed his same green eyes, and then at his wife. To my horror, David chose his new life. "Officer, my wife is a respected member of the community," David said, stepping in front of Melissa. "This must be a misunderstanding."

My heart shattered, but I refused to let them win. I pointed directly at the high-definition security camera mounted on the pole right above the slide. "Check the footage," I demanded of the officers. Melissa’s smug smile vanished instantly, and a look of pure panic washed over her face as the officers nodded and headed to the park office.
