Previously: When the yard's most feared inmate cornered Maya to assert his dominance, he expected her to beg for mercy. Instead, she looked him dead in the eye and smiled.

A Dangerous Proposition

As the cheers of the crowd died down, Brody stepped closer, his massive shadow completely engulfing Maya. He grabbed her by the collar of her tank top, lifting her slightly off her feet. The guards in the watchtowers watched lazily, used to minor scuffles and slow to intervene when Brody was involved. But Maya remained calm, her heart beating in a steady, controlled rhythm.

"You think you're tough?" Brody growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "I could snap you in half right here, and nobody would say a word."

Maya leaned in, her face inches from his. "You could," she whispered, her voice carrying an icy confidence that made Brody pause. "But if you do, you'll never find the five million dollars from the harbor heist."

The giant froze. His grip on her collar loosened just enough for her feet to touch the ground. The harbor heist was the legendary, unsolved robbery that had landed Brody in maximum security. The money had never been recovered, and Brody had spent the last three years trying to find the person who had stolen it from his crew. He had no idea that the thief was Maya's brother, who had died in custody carrying the secret to his grave.

"What did you just say?" Brody hissed, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the yard to ensure no one else had heard.

Maya smiled, a sharp, dangerous expression. "I know where it is. And I'm the only one who can get it out. But you're going to have to keep me alive to get your hands on it."

Before Brody could respond, a shadow fell over them. Officer Miller, a crooked guard known for taking bribes, stepped in, his nightstick tapping against his palm. He had been watching them from the shadows of the wall, and the look in his eyes suggested he had heard far more than he should have.
