Previously: When an aggressive inmate cornered Clara in the prison yard, demanding her worn-out sneakers, Clara refused. She knew the secret hidden inside those shoes was her only ticket to freedom.

A Dangerous Alliance

Instead of calling for help, I looked toward the guard tower, but Officer Miller, the head of security, simply turned his back. It was clear that Brenda wasn't acting alone; she was working under Miller's orders. Brenda dragged me roughly toward the shadow of the laundry building, a notorious blind spot where the security cameras couldn't reach. Two of her loyal associates stood guard at the entrance, ensuring we wouldn't be interrupted.

I was pressed against the rough brick wall, gasping for air as Brenda pulled a crude, sharpened piece of metal from her waistband. The shiv glinted dangerously in the harsh daylight. She pointed it directly at my throat, her eyes flashing with a desperate, frantic energy.

"I don't want to carve you up, kid, but I need those shoes. Miller promised me my transfer if I get them for him. Don't make this difficult."

My mind raced. I knew about Miller's empty promises, and I knew why he wanted the shoes. The left sole contained a microchip with encrypted files proving that Miller and the prison administration were laundering money for the same cartel that had framed me. But I also knew something else—something my brother had discovered before he was silenced.

I looked directly into Brenda's eyes, ignoring the sharp metal hovering near my neck. I had to gamble with my life.

"Brenda, listen to me," I whispered urgently. "Miller is lying to you. He's not going to transfer you. The cartel he works for is the same one holding your daughter's debt. If you hand him these shoes, you destroy the only evidence that can put them away. They will have no reason to keep your daughter alive."

Brenda froze. The color drained from her face, and the hand holding the weapon began to tremble. The tough exterior she had cultivated for years seemed to crumble in an instant, revealing a terrified mother desperate to protect her child.
