Previously: When a ruthless prison bully cornered Clara in the yard demanding her sneakers, Clara refused to back down. Little did the bully know, those shoes held the one thing that could set Clara free.

A Dangerous Alliance

With the sharp point of the metal shiv piercing her scrubs, Clara knew she had only seconds to live. She forced herself to look past Brenda's rage and straight into her eyes. If she was going to survive, she had to strike a chord that Brenda couldn't ignore.

"Marcus isn't going to save you, Brenda," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind. "And he's certainly not going to protect your brother."

Brenda froze. The name of the powerful gang leader outside seemed to strike a nerve. Her grip on Clara's collar loosened slightly, though the shiv remained pressed firmly against Clara's side. "What did you say?" Brenda hissed, her eyes narrowing in suspicion.

Clara took a shallow breath, careful not to press herself further into the blade.

"I know Marcus paid you to get these shoes and destroy what's inside," Clara said quickly. "But he lied to you. He promised to clear your brother’s name, but my sister Lily saw the police files on the outside. Marcus already set your brother up. He's the fall guy for the entire heist, and he was arrested two days ago."

A wave of shock crossed Brenda's hardened face. Her hands began to tremble. Her brother was the only family she had left, the sole reason she did Marcus's dirty work inside these walls. For a long moment, the yard was silent, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. Brenda looked at Clara's white sneakers, then back at Clara's desperate but honest eyes.

She had spent years protecting her younger sibling, believing that her sacrifices inside would guarantee his safety outside. Now, the realization of Marcus's betrayal crashed down on her like a tidal wave. The anger in her eyes shifted from Clara to the invisible forces pulling the strings from the outside.

Brenda slowly lowered the shiv, stepping back a fraction. She was torn between her fear of Marcus and the devastating realization that she had been betrayed. Before she could make a decision, a loud whistle echoed across the yard. The guards were calling for end-of-day lockup. Brenda leaned in close one last time, her voice shaking. "If you're lying, you're dead. But if you're telling the truth, we need to move fast."
