Previously: When my husband pushed me from our snowy gothic balcony to silence a dark secret, he thought I was gone forever. He didn't realize someone was waiting in the shadows.

A Frozen Sanctuary

The sensation of falling was instantly replaced by a violent, breath-knocking impact. I didn't hit the stone courtyard; instead, I crashed into a massive, frozen snowdrift, cushioned further by the desperate, lunging form of Jonah. He had thrown himself beneath me to break my fall. Darkness claimed me before I could even thank him.

When I finally opened my eyes, the smell of burning pine and the warmth of a crackling fireplace greeted me. I was lying on a rustic cot inside the old caretaker's cottage at the edge of the estate. Jonah was kneeling beside me, his face bruised and his hands shaking as he held mine. "Thank God you're alive, Elsa," he whispered, tears glistening in his eyes.

He explained that Liam believed I was dead and was already spinning a tragic tale of an accidental slip to the police. If I returned now without proof, Liam's high-priced lawyers would destroy my credibility and lock me away. We were trapped in a web of lies.

Suddenly, the cabin door slipped open, and Sophia stepped inside, her crimson gown soaked with melted snow. She fell to her knees beside my cot, weeping bitterly. "I'm so sorry, Elsa. I was too afraid to stop him," she sobbed, pulling a silver flash drive from her pocket. "But I have the security footage. I downloaded it before Liam could wipe the server. It shows everything."

Before we could celebrate, heavy footsteps crunched on the frozen gravel outside. The door handle rattled violently, and Liam's shadow fell across the frosted windowpane. He had followed Sophia's tracks in the snow.

"Sophia! Open this door!" Liam shouted from the darkness, his voice dripping with lethal intent. "I know she's in there. Open it, or I'll make sure none of you leave these woods alive!"
