Previously: When three arrogant young men confronted a quiet senior on a misty lake dock, they thought he was an easy target. But they had no idea who they were actually messing with.

The silence on the misty dock grew heavy, suffocating the arrogant laughter of the three young men. Derek sneered, expecting the old man to cower and run. Instead, Thomas slowly reached his weathered hand inside the deep pocket of his dark canvas coat. Jason and Derek instinctively took a half-step back, their eyes widening as they wondered if the old-timer was reaching for a weapon.

The Tide Turns

Instead of a weapon, Thomas pulled out a heavy-duty satellite phone. He flipped it open and calmly dialed a direct number. The third boy, Tyler, who had stayed slightly in the background, suddenly gasped. He had been staring intently at Thomas’s sharp jawline and piercing blue eyes. He recognized the face from the bronze plaque in the town hall and the front page of the regional newspaper just last week.

"Jason, stop! Do you know who that is?" Tyler whispered frantically, his face draining of color. "That’s Judge Thomas Sterling. He retired from the federal bench last year!"

Jason laughed nervously, trying to hide his sudden spike of fear. "So what? He’s just a retired old guy. He doesn't own this dock."

Thomas looked up, a cold, knowing smile playing on his lips. He put the call on speakerphone. Before the line connected, he spoke in a low, resonant voice that carried across the water.

"Actually, Jason, I do own this dock. I own this entire lake, the surrounding forest, and the very land your father is planning to build his luxury condos on," Thomas said quietly. "And what your father, Richard, didn't tell you is that his multi-million dollar construction loan is pending my personal approval as the majority shareholder of the regional bank."

Just then, a booming voice echoed from the satellite phone's speaker. It was Sheriff Miller, a man who had worked alongside Judge Sterling for over two decades. The boys froze as they realized the trap they had walked into.
