Previously: When Clara walked onto the dusty desert shooting range, the instructors laughed at her. But they had no idea who she really was—or the secret she was hiding.

The Ghost of the Past

The silence at the range was thick, broken only by the wind whistling through the dry brush. Dave stood frozen, his mouth slightly open as he stared at the target, then back at Clara. The spectators who had been snickering moments ago were now whispering in hushed, reverent tones. But Clara didn’t celebrate. She knew the real test was about to begin.

From the shadow of the main office building, the heavy glass door swung open. A tall man in a tailored grey suit stepped onto the gravel, his polished leather shoes kicking up dust. It was Mark, Clara’s ex-husband, and the wealthy, corrupt security mogul who had spent the last five years trying to erase her from existence.

"Well, well. Still playing the hero, Clara?" Mark sneered, stopping a few feet away.

Dave immediately straightened up. "Sir, she just shot a perfect—"

"I don't care if she shot the wings off a fly," Mark interrupted, his eyes flashing with malice. "She doesn't belong here. In fact, she’s trespassing."

Clara turned slowly, keeping her rifle pointed safely downrange but her gaze locked onto the man who had ruined her life. Years ago, Clara had been an elite military marksman. When Mark’s private security firm botched a high-profile government contract, he had used his political connections to frame Clara for the failure, destroying her career and using his influence to take custody of their seven-year-old daughter, Lily.

"I'm here to recertify, Mark," Clara said, her voice steady but dangerous. "The state board requires a physical test. I just passed yours."

Mark laughed, a cold, mocking sound. He leaned in close, lowering his voice so the onlookers couldn't hear. "I own this range, Clara. I own the local board. You can shoot like a goddess, but you will never see your daughter again. I’ll make sure you rot in poverty."

Clara felt a wave of hot anger, but she forced herself to remain calm. She knew Mark's arrogance would be his downfall. She reached slowly into her utility jacket, her fingers wrapping around a small, active recording device that was broadcasting live to a very specific recipient.
