Previously: When a young, corrupt officer pulls over a retired Internal Affairs chief to plant evidence on a lonely highway, a hidden photograph in the glove box turns the tables completely.

A Dangerous Setup

Officer Baker opened the driver's side door of the vintage sedan, his hands moving with a practiced, nervous urgency. Edward watched him through the dusty rear window, his expression unreadable. He knew exactly what was about to happen. Within seconds, Baker reached beneath the front seat and pulled his hand back, clutching a small, clear plastic bag filled with white powder. He held it up triumphantly, though his eyes remained anxious.

"Looks like your lucky day is over, old man," Baker said, walking back toward Edward with the planted evidence. "This is enough to put you away for a decade."

Edward didn't panic. Instead, a faint, sad smile touched his lips. "Before you call that in, Officer Baker, do yourself a favor. Check the registration folder in the glove compartment."

Sensing something was wrong, Baker gritted his teeth and marched back to the car. He snatched the leather folder from the glove box and flipped it open. Inside, tucked behind the vehicle registration, was an old, laminated photograph. Baker stared at it, and the color instantly drained from his face.

The photo showed a young, proud Edward standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the city's current Police Commissioner. But it was the third man in the photo that made Baker’s breath catch in his throat. It was his own father, David Baker, a legendary retired detective who had saved Edward’s life twenty years ago.

Before Baker could speak, his police radio crackled to life. The harsh, commanding voice of Captain Miller filled the quiet air.

"Baker, is it done? Did you find the 'contraband' in the old man's car yet? Wrap it up and bring him in."

Baker stood frozen. He was holding planted drugs, staring at a photo of his father's best friend, while his corrupt captain demanded he finish the frame-job. The young officer looked at Edward, terror in his eyes, realizing the gravity of the trap he had walked into.
