Previously: When the prison's most feared giant cornered me in the yard, he thought I was easy prey. He had no idea who I really was—or why I let them lock me up.

The roaring of the crowd slowly began to die down as the inmates realized Maya wasn't backing down. The tension in the yard became suffocating. Brody’s eyes narrowed, his fists clenching at his sides. He wasn't used to being challenged, let alone by a new transfer who looked like she weighed half as much as he did.

A Dangerous Revelation

Brody stepped closer, his chest pressing against her shoulder, trying to force her to break eye contact. But Maya leaned in, her voice dropping to a razor-sharp whisper that only he could hear.

"I know about the ledger, Brody," she said, her voice dead calm. "I know it’s hidden behind the loose brick in the old library boiler room. And I know exactly how much the warden is paying you to keep this yard quiet."

Brody froze. The color drained from his face, his massive frame going completely rigid. The mocking giant vanished, replaced by a man who realized his life was suddenly hanging by a thread. He grabbed her by the collar of her tank top, lifting her slightly off the ground, his face twisted in a murderous rage.

"Where did you get that name?" he hissed, his knuckles turning white. "Who are you?"

"My name is Maya," she whispered, even as her breath was cut off. "Leo was my brother. The boy you murdered to keep your little secret safe. And I came here to finish what he started."

The yard went dead silent. The inmates watched in stunned disbelief as the prison's most feared monster hesitated. The guards on the watchtower shifted their rifles, sensing the explosive shift in power. Brody raised his fist, his eyes wild with fury, ready to silence her forever. But Maya only smiled, showing him the small, blinking device she had smuggled inside her palm.
