I Saved a Freezing Wolf from the Ice, and Then the Pack Surrounded Me
Previously: When Lucas dragged a drowning wolf from a frozen reservoir, he thought his battle was over. But as the pack emerged from the mist, he realized his trial had just begun.
The Standoff on the Ice
The mist parted slowly, revealing a sight that made Lucas's heart stop. Out of the dense fir forest, five massive wolves walked onto the ice. They moved with a silent, synchronized grace that was both beautiful and terrifying. Lucas lay flat on his back, completely defenseless as the pack surrounded him. The alpha, a giant black wolf with a scarred muzzle and piercing yellow eyes, stepped forward. He let out a low, rumbling growl that vibrated through the ice beneath Lucas’s body.
Lucas braced himself for the worst, closing his eyes. But instead of an attack, he felt a soft nudge. The alpha had bypassed him to check on the shivering, wet wolf Lucas had just rescued. Once assured she was alive, the alpha turned his intense gaze back to Lucas. For several agonizing seconds, man and beast stared at each other, connected by a strange, unspoken understanding. The tension was broken by the sharp, deafening crack of a rifle shot.

The bullet shattered the ice just inches from Lucas's shoulder. The wolves scattered in a panic, growling fiercely. Lucas scrambled to his feet, his eyes operating with survival instinct as he looked toward the shoreline. Emerging from the trees were Marcus and his brother, two notorious local poachers who had terrorized the local wildlife for years. Marcus held a high-powered rifle, his eyes locked onto the black alpha wolf.
"Step away from the wolves, Lucas!" Marcus shouted, his voice echoing off the hills. "That black hide is worth a fortune. Don't get yourself killed over a pack of pests!"
The saved wolf was still too weak to run, and the alpha stood protectively over her, baring his fangs. Lucas knew that if he stepped aside, the wolves would be slaughtered. Driven by a sudden, fierce protectiveness, Lucas stepped directly between the poachers and the pack, shielding the animals with his own body. Marcus sneered, raising his rifle and aiming it straight at Lucas's chest. "Move, or you're going down with them," Marcus warned, his finger tightening on the trigger.
”Marcus warned, his finger tightening on the trigger.
