Previously: When the prison's most feared inmate demanded Clara's worn-out sneakers, Clara refused to back down. What looked like a simple yard fight was actually a battle for her survival—and her sister's memory.

Before Brenda could strike, the shrill blast of a guard's whistle echoed across the yard. Brenda slowly let go of Clara's collar, giving her a dark, promising glare before retreating into the crowd. Clara sank back against the fence, her chest heaving. She knew this was only a temporary reprieve. Brenda would be back, and next time, there would be no guards to stop her.

The Secret in the Sole

Back in her cramped cell, Clara sat on her bunk, staring at the scuffed white sneakers. She knew she couldn't keep fighting Brenda off forever. But as she rubbed her hand over the right shoe, her thumb caught on a strange, thick seam inside the sole. Lily had worked for a high-profile attorney before her death, and she had promised Clara she would find the evidence to clear her name. Could it be?

With trembling fingers, Clara pried at the inner lining of the shoe. To her absolute shock, a tiny, laminated micro-SD card slipped out into her palm. Clara's breath caught. This was it—the encrypted files Lily had gathered proving that Clara had been framed by a corrupt local politician. But her hope was quickly cut short by the sound of heavy footsteps approaching her cell.

It was night lockup, and the lights had just gone out. The heavy iron door of her cell clicked open with a soft, unauthorized buzz. Brenda stepped into the darkness, flanked by two of her loyal enforcers. Clara clutched the shoe to her chest, her back pressed against the cold concrete wall as Brenda smiled in the dark.

"I told you that you'd regret it," Brenda whispered, stepping closer. "Give me the shoes, or we do this the hard way."
