The Sheriff Protected Me From the Frozen Wasteland When My Family Cast Me Out
Previously: When Sarah was banished into the freezing Montana winter for a crime she didn't commit, she expected to perish. Instead, a stoic small-town sheriff offered her an unexpected second chance.
A Cold Confrontation
Inside the warmth of the sheriff’s cabin, Sarah finally thawed. Over a cup of hot black tea, she poured her heart out to Thomas, explaining how her brother-in-law, Arthur, had framed her for the theft of the town's winter treasury to cover his own gambling debts. Thomas listened in silence, his expression grim but attentive. He knew the greed of men like Arthur, and he knew how easily a crowd could be whipped into a frenzy of false righteousness.
The peace was shattered the following morning. The sharp, rhythmic thud of horses' hooves on packed snow echoed through the valley. Sarah rushed to the window to see three riders approaching, their silhouettes dark against the blinding white landscape. At the front was Arthur, his face twisted in a triumphant sneer, a rifle strapped to his saddle. Beside him rode two hired mercenaries wearing deputy badges from the neighboring town.

Thomas didn't hesitate. He buckled his gun belt, checked his revolver, and stepped out onto the porch. Sarah followed him, her heart hammering against her ribs. She couldn't let this innocent sheriff pay the price for her family's malice.
"Thomas!" Arthur shouted, halting his horse a few yards away. "You're harboring a thief. Hand Sarah over, or we'll tear Oakhaven apart to get her. She belongs in a cell."
Thomas stood his ground, his hand resting loosely near his hip. The wind howled between them, carrying the tension of a ticking clock.
"She's under my jurisdiction now, Arthur," Thomas replied, his voice deadly quiet. "And around here, we require proof before we condemn a soul. You have no authority in Oakhaven."
Arthur laughed, a cold, mocking sound, and unholstered his rifle. "I have all the authority I need right here," he sneered, aiming the weapon directly at the sheriff's chest. The two mercenaries drew their weapons, ready to fire at the slightest provocation. Sarah stepped forward, ready to sacrifice her own freedom to save Thomas, but the sheriff gently barred her path with his arm, his eyes locked onto Arthur.
