The Sheriff Welcomed a Banished Widow in the Snow, but Her Past Followed Her
Previously: When Martha arrived in the frozen town of Blackwood, she expected to be driven away. Instead, Sheriff George offered her shelter—until her late husband's ruthless brother arrived with a warrant.
The Ghost of the Past
For nearly a month, Martha found a fragile peace in Blackwood. She lived in a small cabin near the edge of town, helping the local doctor treat the sick and injured. The townspeople, seeing her quiet dedication, slowly began to accept her. More than anyone, George became her anchor. Every evening, he would walk her home, their conversations growing longer and more intimate. But Martha knew that secrets had a way of thawing out when the spring came, and hers was far too dangerous to remain buried.
The illusion of safety shattered on a Tuesday morning. The door to the sheriff's office was kicked open, letting in a blast of freezing wind. Martha looked up to see three heavily armed men spilling into the room, led by a man she hoped she would never see again. It was Silas, her late husband's ruthless younger brother.

"Well, well, Martha," Silas drawled, tossing an official document onto George's desk. "Did you really think you could run from the law? Or did you think this small-town sheriff could protect a murderer?"
Martha shrank back as Silas accused her of poisoning her husband, Thomas, to inherit his estate. It was a monstrous lie—Silas was the one who had poisoned Thomas, framing Martha when she refused to hand over the family's land deeds. Silas turned his sneer toward George, demanding he hand her over or face the consequences.
George stood up slowly, his face unreadable. Instead of reaching for his Colt, he reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished brass key. He tossed it onto the desk next to the warrant.
"I know exactly who you are, Silas," George said softly, his eyes turning cold. "And I know what you did."
Silas froze, his face draining of all color as his eyes locked onto the key. He stumbled backward, his hand trembling.
