Previously: Clara fled into the freezing wilderness to escape her powerful, ruthless husband. When the local sheriff welcomed her with open arms, she thought she was safe—until the past caught up.

John led Clara inside the warmth of his modest office, where a cast-iron stove crackled with a welcoming fire. As she thawed her frozen hands over the heat, she poured her heart out. She confessed that she was fleeing her husband, Thomas Vance, a wealthy and corrupt mayor from a neighboring territory who had framed her for theft to ensure she could never escape his control.

John listened intently, his expression hardening not with suspicion toward Clara, but with a quiet rage against the injustice she had suffered. He assured her that the law in Blackwood was bound by justice, not by the influence of corrupt politicians. But their brief moment of peace was violently shattered.

The heavy oak door was suddenly kicked open, letting in a blast of freezing air and three armed men. At the front stood Thomas Vance himself, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph.

"Well, Clara," Thomas sneered, stepping into the room. "Did you really think you could hide from me in this godforsaken wilderness?"

John slowly rose from his desk, his hand resting calmly near his revolver. He warned Thomas that he had no authority in this town. However, Thomas merely laughed, tossing a legally binding federal arrest warrant onto the desk.

"I have the law on my side, Sheriff," Thomas declared, his voice dripping with venom. "Hand her over, or my deputies will paint this snow red with your blood. You have no reason to die for a thief."

The tension in the cramped office was thick enough to cut with a knife. The three deputies drew their weapons, aiming them directly at John. Clara felt her heart sink. She could not bear the thought of this kind sheriff losing his life to protect her. She stepped forward to surrender, but John extended an arm, shielding her behind his broad frame. He looked at Thomas, and instead of drawing his weapon, he reached into his desk drawer.
