A Smug General Mocked My Military Career, So I Took One Shot That Changed Everything
Previously: When an arrogant general tried to humiliate Captain Stephanie in front of her entire unit, she demanded one chance to prove her worth—and changed her life forever.
The Price of Truth
A mile downrange, the distinct, metallic clang of lead hitting steel echoed back to the firing line. It was a perfect bullseye, dead center on the target. A stunned silence fell over the range, broken only by the quiet murmurs of the visiting dignitaries. General Lawrence’s face drained of color, his jaw tightening into a hard, angry line. He offered no praise, no nod of acknowledgment. Instead, he abruptly dismissed the unit and ordered Stephanie to report to his office immediately.
When Stephanie entered the air-conditioned sanctuary of the command trailer, the atmosphere was frigid. Lawrence stood by the window, his back to her. Without turning around, he gestured toward a thick, beige folder resting on his polished mahogany desk.

"Your transfer papers," Lawrence said, his voice flat. "You're being reassigned to an outpost in Alaska. You leave at dawn."
Stephanie stared at the folder, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had just proven herself to be the best marksman on the base, yet she was being banished. She approached the desk, but instead of picking up the transfer document, her eyes caught the edge of a classified logistics report poking out from underneath it. It was a report she had flagged earlier that week—one detailing massive, unexplained discrepancies in heavy weaponry shipments leaving the base.
Suddenly, the pieces fell into place. Sidelining her hadn't been about her minor shoulder injury, nor was this transfer about her showing him up on the range. Lawrence was using his authority to cover up a massive smuggling operation within the base, and Stephanie's meticulous administrative work had brought her too close to the truth.
"This isn't about my shooting, is it, General?" Stephanie asked, looking him dead in the eye. "You need me gone because I know about the missing shipments."
Lawrence slowly turned, a dark, menacing smile spreading across his face. He leaned over the desk, his presence looming. "Insubordination is a serious offense, Captain. Sign the papers, or I will ensure you spend the next ten years in a military prison."
