Previously: When a cocky sergeant decides to publicly humiliate a seemingly low-ranking transfer in the base gym, he has no idea he just targeted his new commanding officer.

The Weight of the Eagle

The silver eagle was not a standard-issue piece of identification. It was the unmistakable insignia of a full Colonel, a rank that commanded absolute authority on this base. In the military, disrespecting a fellow soldier was a serious infraction, but assaulting a commanding officer was a career-ending offense. The surrounding soldiers, realizing the catastrophic mistake they had just witnessed, snapped to attention so fast their boots cracked against the concrete floor.

Blake stood frozen, his chest heaving as he stared at the silver eagle in Lauren’s hand. He tried to speak, but only a dry, pathetic croak escaped his throat. Lauren didn't yell. Her silence was far more terrifying than any scream could ever be.

"Sergeant Blake," Lauren said, her voice cutting through the silent gym like a scalpel. "You will report to my office tomorrow morning at exactly 0600 hours. Dress uniform. If you are even one second late, I will personally ensure your military career ends before sunrise."

She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving the gym in a state of absolute shock. That evening, Lauren sat in her temporary quarters, scrubbing the blue residue from her hair. She opened her laptop and began digging into Blake's service files. What she found, however, made her blood run cold. Blake wasn't just a spoiled bully; he had a long history of severe hazing complaints, all of which had been mysteriously dismissed or covered up by higher-ups. He was protected.

The next morning, at exactly 0555 hours, a sharp knock echoed through Lauren's office. When she opened the door, Blake was standing there in his pristine dress uniform, trembling. But he wasn't alone. Standing right behind him, with an arrogant sneer of his own, was General Henderson, the regional commander.

"Colonel Vance," Henderson said, stepping into her office without invitation. "I think we need to have a little chat about your transition into this unit. Sergeant Blake here is my nephew, and I suggest we put yesterday's little gym incident behind us. For the sake of your career."
