A Smug Young Soldier Mocked an Elderly Veteran, Unaware of His Legendary Past
Previously: When a young soldier publicly humiliated an veteran at a shooting competition, he had no idea he was challenging a legendary sniper from a classified ghost unit.
The Ghost of the Desert
The silence at the shooting range was deafening. The younger soldiers who had been snickering moments ago now stood frozen, staring at the digital monitor. A perfect bullseye at eight hundred yards with a vintage rifle and no electronic assistance was a feat of near-superhuman skill.
Derek slowly lowered his binoculars, his face pale and stripped of all its former arrogance. He looked from the monitor to George, who was calmly cleaning the breach of his rifle as if he had just completed a mundane chore.

"Who... who are you?"
Derek whispered, his voice cracking. Before George could answer, Colonel Harris, the base commander, stepped forward from the observation tent. His eyes were locked on the faded black wolf tattoo on George’s arm. The Colonel’s face was a mask of sheer reverence. He snapped a crisp, rigid salute to the old man.
"I never thought I’d live to see one of you in person,"
Colonel Harris said, his voice thick with emotion. "The Ghost Unit" was disbanded forty years ago. They were the most elite, highly classified sniper division in military history. They were sent into situations where survival was deemed impossible. And they never lost a man.
Derek stared at his commander in disbelief."Sir, he's just an old man in a dusty coat. There must be some mistake."
"Shut your mouth, soldier!"
Harris snapped, glaring at Derek.
"This man has saved more American lives than your entire platoon ever will. He is a legend."
George stood up, brushing the desert sand from his trousers. He looked at Derek, not with anger, but with a deep, sorrowful pity.
"I didn't come here to win a trophy, son,"
George said softly, his voice carrying the weight of decades.
"I came here because of a promise I made forty-five years ago to a man named Thomas Vance."
Hearing that name, Derek stiffened. His breath caught in his throat, and the color completely drained from his face. Thomas Vance was his grandfather—a war hero who had died in a classified mission decades ago.
