A Smug Young Soldier Mocked An Old Veteran, But One Shot Changed Everything
Previously: When a cocky young soldier ridiculed a 66-year-old veteran at a desert firing range, he thought it was an easy win. But one legendary shot revealed a secret that changed everything.
The Ghost of the Past
The silence that fell over the firing range was absolute. The arrogant smirk that had defined Jack’s face just moments ago was completely gone, replaced by a pale, trembling mask of shock. He slowly lowered his binoculars, his hands shaking so violently that he almost dropped them. The other soldiers in his squad looked back and forth between Jack and the quiet veteran, confused by the sudden shift in atmosphere.
Thomas stood up, brushing the desert dust from his olive-drab jacket. He didn't gloat, nor did he look at Jack with anger. He simply began to roll his sleeve back down, covering the black wolf tattoo. But Jack lunged forward, his voice cracking with an emotion that sounded dangerously close to panic.

"Wait! Please, don't cover it," Jack pleaded, stepping into Thomas’s personal space. "Where did you get that mark? Who gave it to you?"
Thomas stopped, his sharp blue eyes locking onto the younger man. "It’s from a lifetime ago, son," Thomas replied quietly. "A unit that officially never existed. We did what had to be done, and we went our separate ways. Or at least, those of us who made it out did."
Jack reached into his tactical vest, his fingers fumbling with a zipper. He pulled out a small, worn leather pouch. From it, he extracted a tarnished silver dog tag, suspended from a frayed chain. He held it out to Thomas, his eyes swimming with tears. Thomas looked down at the metal tag. The name engraved on it was Marcus Vance.
Thomas felt a cold shock run through his veins. Marcus Vance had been his spotter, his brother-in-arms, and the man who had shielded Thomas from an incoming mortar shell thirty years ago. Marcus had died in Thomas's arms in a nameless valley, far from home.
"Marcus was my father," Jack whispered, his voice trembling. "He died when I was just a boy. Before he left for his final deployment, he told my mother that if I ever met a man with the black wolf tattoo, I had to give him this."
