A Smug Soldier Mocked an Old Veteran, Until One Shot Revealed His Identity
Previously: When a young, arrogant soldier mocks a 68-year-old veteran at a desert shooting competition, he has no idea that the old man is actually a legendary ghost unit sniper.
The Ultimate Challenge
The silence that followed the shot was heavy and suffocating. The surrounding soldiers stared at William in absolute awe, their previous amusement completely vanished. Jax, however, felt a burning mixture of shame and fury boiling inside him. His reputation as the top sniper of his division had just been shattered by an old man in a faded jacket. He stepped closer to William, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.
'It was a fluke!'
Jax spat, his voice trembling with forced anger. 'You got lucky with the wind. An old-timer like you doesn't belong on this range. If you're really some legendary ghost, prove it again. I challenge you to a real duel, right now!'

The range commander, Colonel Vance, stepped between them, his face stern. 'Stand down, Jax,' the Colonel commanded. 'You have no idea who you are talking to. This man is William, a retired master sniper who served when our operations were entirely off the record. That wolf tattoo is given only to those who survived the most dangerous deep-cover missions in history.'
But Jax's pride was too wounded to listen. He pointed out toward the far edge of the canyon, where a tiny, red-painted target was barely visible, nestled between two jagged rock formations nearly fifteen hundred yards away. The crosswinds in that canyon were notorious, shifting unpredictably every few seconds.
'If he's a legend, let him hit that,'
Jax challenged, his eyes wild with desperation. 'If he misses, he admits he's a fraud. If he hits it... I'll resign from my post today.'
William looked at the distant canyon, then at the arrogant young soldier. He saw the same destructive pride that had cost many young men their lives in his own youth. He knew he didn't have to prove anything, but he also knew that some lessons had to be taught the hard way to save a soul from its own arrogance.
