A Smug Stepfather Tried To Steal My Late Father's Estate While I Was Deployed
Previously: Returning from a grueling navy deployment, Lieutenant Sarah Jenkins finds her smug stepfather attempting to steal her late father's multi-million dollar estate using a forged document. But she has a secret weapon.
The Unraveling of a Lie
Robert’s mocking smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a shadow of unease. However, his attorney quickly recovered, stepping forward with an air of supreme confidence. "Your Honor," the attorney argued, "the Lieutenant’s theatricality cannot override a legally binding, notarized document. The signature has been verified by our independent experts. The estate belongs to my client."
Sarah’s attorney, a sharp and seasoned military law specialist named Marcus Vance, smiled calmly. "We agree that the signature is indeed a perfect match, Your Honor. However, it is a perfect match because it was digitally traced from a scanned document. And more importantly, my client could not have physically signed this paper on the date indicated."

Marcus stepped forward, placing a thick, certified blue folder onto the judge's bench. "We have provided the court with the official, declassified deployment logs of the USS Abraham Lincoln, signed by the Admiral of the fleet. On October 14th—the exact date this document was allegedly signed and notarized in New York City—Lieutenant Jenkins was on active duty in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, performing vital operations. She had no internet access, let alone the physical ability to meet with a New York notary."
A collective whisper broke out in the gallery. The judge began flipping through the official military logs, his expression hardening. Robert’s face drained of color. He turned to his lawyer, his smug composure completely shattering as he began to whisper frantically.
But Marcus wasn’t finished. "Furthermore, Your Honor, we would like to call our primary witness to the stand. We call Clara Higgins, the executive assistant of the late Mr. Jenkins."
The heavy wooden doors of the courtroom swung open, and a middle-aged woman in a simple gray dress walked in. Robert gasped, gripping the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned white. Clara had been his accomplice, but the guilt of betraying Sarah’s father had finally broken her silence.
