Previously: When Clara's scars were maliciously exposed at an elite gala, she expected ruin. Instead, a surprise military arrival turned her public humiliation into a moment of ultimate honor.

The Fallen Hero

The silence in the grand ballroom was deafening. Charles’s face drained of all color, his mouth hanging open in sheer terror. He looked from the highly decorated Admiral to Clara, his mind struggling to connect the pieces. The "charity case" he had treated like an accessory was actually Captain Clara Sterling—a legendary military surgeon who had vanished from the public eye after a highly classified rescue mission.

"Captain... Sterling?" Charles stammered, stepping forward. "Admiral Vance, surely there is some mistake. Clara is just a quiet nurse. She—"
"Silence!" Admiral Vance barked, his eyes flashing with steel. "You have no right to speak her name, civilian. Captain Sterling received those scars while shielding three wounded soldiers from an enemy mortar blast. She is a national hero."

Victoria, desperate to salvage her pride, tried to laugh it off.

"A hero? She's a freak!" Victoria sneered. "Look at her back! She ruined this gala!"

The Admiral turned his icy gaze onto Victoria.

"And you must be Victoria Vance," the Admiral said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble.

The crowd gasped. Victoria froze, her eyes widening. She had never met the legendary Admiral, but she knew her family’s wealth was entirely dependent on military logistics contracts—contracts that Admiral Vance personally overseen and approved.

"Uncle Vance?" Victoria whispered, her voice trembling as the horrifying realization set in.
"Do not call me that," the Admiral replied coldly. "You have disgraced this uniform, this family, and this country tonight. I have spent months searching for the woman who saved my men, only to find my own niece treating her like garbage. Your family's contracts are officially under review, Victoria. Effective immediately."

Victoria collapsed back against a table, her golden gown suddenly feeling like a shroud of ruin.
