Previously: Standing on a sunlit New York sidewalk, Maya spotted a ghost from her past. The man she loved, who had vanished five years ago without a trace, was walking right toward her.

The Cruelest Betrayal

Maya crossed the street in a daze, the honking horns and rushing pedestrians completely vanishing from her consciousness. When she finally stood before him, she reached out, her trembling hand touching the rough fabric of his jacket. He was warm. He was real. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, hot and fast.

"David? How... how is this possible?" she sobbed, her voice cracking. "We searched for you. I mourned you!"

David’s eyes filled with a devastating mixture of love and agony. He gently took her hand and pulled her into a quiet, shadowed alleyway nearby. "I never wanted to leave you, Maya," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "But I was forced to. Your mother... she gave me no choice."

Maya stared at him, her mind racing. "My mother? What does she have to do with this?"

David took a deep breath, revealing a dark truth that had been buried for half a decade. Five years ago, David’s family business had faced a minor compliance issue—an honest mistake that could be easily resolved. However, Maya’s mother, a powerful corporate attorney, had intercepted the files. She threatened to fabricate evidence of federal fraud, ensuring David and his father would spend decades in prison, unless David disappeared completely.

"She told me she would destroy my family if I stayed," David explained, holding Maya's shaking hands. "And there was someone else involved. Marcus. He was the one who provided her with the financial files. They planned it together so Marcus could step in when you were vulnerable."

The revelation hit Maya like a physical blow. The safe, loving man she was about to marry in three days was the very monster who had orchestrated the destruction of her happiness. Just then, her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a text from Marcus: "Where are you, darling? I'm waiting outside the boutique." Maya looked up at David, horror and fury warring inside her.
