Previously: When Chloe received a mysterious beige envelope from her stepmother Helen during her graduation party, she expected a simple card. Instead, it triggered a confrontation that exposed a decade of family lies.

A Sudden Storm

But the fragile moment of joy was instantly shattered. The heavy double doors of the reception hall swung open with a violent crash, cutting through the music and laughter. Chloe's Aunt Beatrice strode into the room, her designer heels clicking sharply against the polished floor. Behind her stood two uniformed police officers, their expressions grim. The celebratory chatter died instantly, replaced by a suffocating silence.

Beatrice marched straight toward Chloe and Helen, her face twisted in a mask of righteous fury. She pointed a sharp, manicured finger at Helen.

"Arrest her!" Beatrice demanded, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "She is a thief, and she is handing my niece stolen property!"

Chloe stepped protectively in front of her stepmother, her heart hammering wildly. "Aunt Beatrice, stop this! What are you talking about? Helen just gave me my mother’s cottage!"

Beatrice let out a harsh, mocking laugh, waving a folded document in the air. "Your stepmother is a fraud, Chloe. Ten years ago, right after your father died, she signed this legal waiver. She gave up every single right to your father’s estate in exchange for a massive cash payout. She took the money and abandoned this family. And now, she has stolen the deed to that cottage and embezzled funds from our family trust to buy your affection!"

The police officer stepped forward, addressing Helen. "Ma'am, we have a complaint of grand larceny. We need you to come with us."

Chloe turned to Helen, waiting for her to defend herself. But Helen stood frozen, her face pale, her hands trembling in her cream-colored cardigan. She didn't say a word. Just as Beatrice reached out to snatch the beige envelope from Chloe’s hands, Helen’s demeanor suddenly changed. She stepped forward, blocking Beatrice, her eyes flashing with a fierce determination Chloe had never seen before.

"Do not touch her, Beatrice," Helen said, her voice trembling but incredibly strong. "If you want to talk about stolen money, perhaps we should discuss the warehouse fire ten years ago."

Beatrice’s face instantly drained of color, her hand freezing in mid-air.
