Dismissing the platoon immediately, Commander Charles ordered Nicole to follow him to his private briefing room. The heavy steel door shut out the howling desert wind, leaving only the hum of the air conditioner. "I didn't abandon him, Nicole," Charles said softly, tears finally spilling over his weathered cheeks. "The military command structure was compromised. We were ambushed by our own intelligence. Marcus ordered me to retreat because he was already mortally wounded, and he held the detonator to destroy the enemy compound. He gave me this watch and told me to hide his family. He knew they would come for you next."

Nicole stared at the photo, the foundation of her lifelong hatred suddenly crumbling. Charles pulled out a dusty, classified file from a hidden safe behind the wall map. Inside were documents detailing a massive embezzlement scheme within the high-ranking command, a scheme her father had discovered just before his death.
