A Stranger Bought Me Dinner When I Was Homeless—Then I Recognized His Voice
Previously: Pregnant and starving, Hannah was eating leftovers at a fast-food joint. When a kind stranger bought her a warm meal, she had no idea their lives were already intertwined.
As Michael walked out onto the chilly patio, his eyes scanned Hannah’s worn clothes and tired face. But as he drew closer, his footsteps faltered. The polite smile on his face vanished, replaced by utter shock.
"Hannah? Is that really you?"he asked, his voice cracking with emotion.
A Voice from the Past
Hannah’s breath caught in her throat. Hearing her name spoken in that familiar, gentle tone sent a shockwave through her. She looked up, really looking at him for the first time. Beneath the neatly trimmed beard and the expensive dark jacket was the boy she had loved and left behind five years ago. Michael had been her high school sweetheart, the one she had abandoned to pursue a high-powered career that had ultimately chewed her up and spat her out.

Before she could find the words to explain her descent into homelessness, the sharp click of high heels echoed on the pavement. A woman in an elegant designer coat stepped up, wrapping her arm tightly around Michael’s.
"Michael, honey, what is taking so long? We’re going to be late for our engagement dinner,"she complained, casting a look of pure disgust at Hannah.
Michael looked torn, his eyes darting between his wealthy fiancée, Vanessa, and the pregnant, shivering woman who had once held his heart. Before he could speak, Hannah’s phone vibrated violently in her pocket. With trembling fingers, she pulled it out to find a text from her ex-husband, Marcus. "I know where you are. Sign the custody waiver tonight, or my lawyers will make sure you never see your child," the message read.
The sheer terror of losing her baby, combined with the shock of seeing Michael, was too much for Hannah's fragile body to bear. A sharp, agonizing pain ripped through her abdomen. She gasped, her eyes rolling back as she began to slide from the chair onto the concrete.
"Hannah!"Michael screamed, lunging forward to catch her before she hit the ground, completely ignoring Vanessa's shrieks of outrage.
