The Sheriff Who Refused to Turn Away a Woman Fleeing Her Dark Past
Previously: When Sarah arrived in the frozen frontier town of Timber Ridge, she expected to be banished for her past. Instead, Sheriff James offered her a second chance she never saw coming.
The Shadows of the Past
The peace Sarah found in Timber Ridge was beautiful, but it was tragically short-lived. Three days after her arrival, the storm broke, leaving behind a crisp, blindingly bright landscape. But the clear skies brought no comfort. A sleek, black carriage arrived in town, completely out of place among the rough-hewn wooden buildings. Out stepped Arthur, her husband's ruthless attorney, accompanied by two armed men with cold, calculating eyes. They had tracked her down, and they had no intention of leaving empty-handed.
Arthur marched directly to the sheriff's office, slamming a signed arrest warrant onto James's desk. Sarah, hiding in the back room, listened with bated breath as Arthur demanded her immediate surrender. James slowly stood up, walking out onto the porch to face the men in the open street. Sarah watched through the window as the confrontation escalated. When James refused to hand her over, Arthur's expression turned venomous.

"She is a fugitive from justice, Sheriff," Arthur sneered. "If you stand in our way, you will be ruined alongside her."
Without a word, James took the warrant, looked at it, and slowly tore it in half, letting the pieces flutter into the deep snow. Arthur's men immediately drew their firearms, but before they could aim, three deputies stepped out from the shadows, rifles raised. The standoff was electric, a single spark away from a bloodbath. In a desperate bid to break James's resolve, Arthur screamed a hidden truth to the gathering crowd.
"You think you're protecting an innocent woman?" Arthur yelled. "Ask her about her first husband! Ask her why he died in a house fire ten years ago!"
Sarah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. The deepest, darkest secret of her life had just been laid bare in the freezing Wyoming air, and she saw James turn his head to look back at her.
