Previously: When Leo returned to his father's ranch, he faced a deadly, chained beast. But instead of attacking, the dog did something that left his bitter father completely frozen in disbelief.

A Father's Bitter Truth

For several long seconds, the only sound on the ranch was the gentle rustling of the wind through the dry grass. Mark stood frozen, his eyes darting between his son and the sleeping Rottweiler. It had been five years since Leo had set foot on this property—five years of silence, anger, and unanswered letters. When Leo finally stood up, gently laying Maya’s head back onto the dirt, Mark took a cautious step forward, his shock quickly curdling back into familiar resentment.

"What are you doing here, Leo?"
Mark asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and anger.
"You can't just show up after half a decade and act like you belong here. And how did you do that? That dog has bitten three people this month. She’s wild."

Leo brushed the dust off his jeans, keeping his voice calm.

"She’s not wild, Dad. She’s broken. She’s been grieving Mom just like we have, but you chained her up and treated her like a monster."

The mention of his late wife struck a nerve. Mark’s eyes flared with sudden fury.

"Don't you dare bring your mother into this! You weren't there when she passed! You walked out on us, and now you want to lecture me on how to run my ranch?"
Mark pointed a shaking finger toward the barn.
"It doesn't matter anyway. It's too late for her. The sheriff’s department issued an order. Maya is scheduled to be put down tomorrow morning at eight. There’s nothing anyone can do."

The words hit Leo like a physical blow. He looked down at Maya, who whimpered slightly in her sleep, as if sensing the impending doom. Leo realized he couldn't keep the truth hidden any longer. He had run away five years ago to protect his father from a devastating reality, but now, a life was on the line.

"There is something we can do, Dad,"
Leo said, reaching into his pocket.
"But first, you need to know what actually happened the night Mom died."
