They Mocked Her at the Shooting Range, But Her Secret Past Shocked Them All
Previously: When Ashley stepped onto the dusty desert shooting range, the instructors laughed. But they had no idea who she really was—or the dangerous secret she was running from.
A Dangerous Past Catches Up
The silence on the range was broken not by applause, but by the crunch of gravel. A black SUV tore through the entrance, kicking up a thick cloud of dust. Ashley’s heart plummeted. She knew that vehicle. She had been running from it for three long years.
The doors flew open, and out stepped Detective Vance, the right-hand man of Ashley's corrupt ex-husband, Sheriff Marcus. Two local deputies followed him, their hands resting ominously on their holsters. Vance’s eyes scanned the crowd before locking onto Ashley.

"Ashley Miller," Vance called out, his voice cutting through the desert air. "You're coming with us. The Sheriff wants his wife back."
Mike stepped forward, his imposing frame blocking Vance's path. His hand hovered near his own sidearm.
"Is there a problem here, officers?" Mike asked, his voice low and dangerous. "This is private property."
"Keep out of this, instructor," Vance sneered, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "She's a fugitive who stole state property. We have an active warrant."
Ashley knew the "state property" was actually a flash drive containing evidence of Marcus’s illegal dealings—the very evidence she had used to escape. Vance took a step toward her, but Ashley didn't back down. She still held the bolt-action rifle, though it was now unloaded.
"He doesn't have a real warrant, Mike," Ashley said, her voice shaking but resolute. "He took my daughter, Lily. He's using her to force me back."
Vance smirked, leaning in.
"She's right. Your little girl is waiting in the county office right now. You come quietly, or you'll never see her again."
The tension was suffocating. Mike looked at Ashley, seeing the raw terror and determination in her eyes. He knew she wasn't a criminal. He turned to Vance with a cold glare.
