A Tiny Woman Stands Up to the Prison's Most Feared Giant and Changes Everything
Previously: When Zoe was sent to maximum security for a crime she didn't commit, she knew she had to survive. But facing the yard's most ruthless giant was a test no one expected.
A Dangerous Alliance
Leo’s mocking grin melted away, replaced by a look of sheer confusion and rising anger. Nobody in this prison dared to look him in the eye, let alone stand unfazed by his wrath.
"You think you're brave, little girl?"he growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble. "I could snap you in half right here, and the guards wouldn't even blink."
I didn't flinch. Instead, I took a half-step forward, closing the distance between us.
"I'm not brave, Leo,"I whispered, keeping my voice low enough that only he could hear.
"I'm just informed. I know about your brother, Marcus."

The effect was instantaneous. Leo’s massive body went completely rigid, and the anger in his eyes was replaced by a flicker of genuine shock. Marcus was his younger brother, serving time in a low-security facility. Leo had been acting as Warden Vance's personal enforcer for years just to keep Marcus safe.
"What do you know about my brother?"he hissed.
"I know Warden Vance is transferring him here next week,"I said, locking my eyes with his.
"And he’s not doing it to keep him safe. He's bringing Marcus here to use him as leverage against you. Vance is planning to eliminate you both once his smuggling ring is secure."
Before Leo could process my words, the heavy steel doors of the yard creaked open. Three guards, led by the notoriously brutal Officer Miller, marched toward us with their batons drawn. Miller had a sick, knowing smile on his face. Warden Vance had sent them to ensure I didn't survive my first day.
"Step back, Leo,"Miller barked, raising his baton.
"We'll handle this troublemaker."Leo stood frozen, torn between his fear for his brother and the shocking truth I had just revealed.
