The Town Cast Me Out in the Cold, But the Sheriff Refused to Abandon Me
Previously: When Jane was exiled from her home during a brutal winter, she expected to perish in the snow—until a kind-hearted sheriff chose mercy over the town's harsh judgment.
The Threat at the Door
Inside the cabin, the crackle of the hearth offered a temporary sanctuary. Thomas handed Jane a mug of hot tea, the steam rising to warm her frozen face. As she thawed, the heavy silence between them began to lift. Thomas revealed that he had never believed the town council's accusations. He knew that Arthur’s brother, Silas, had orchestrated Jane’s exile to cover up his own embezzlement of the town's treasury. But proving it was another matter entirely. The law required evidence, and Silas held all the power in Blackwood.
Jane looked down at her leather trunk. With trembling fingers, she unlocked the brass clasp. Inside, hidden beneath a false bottom, lay Arthur's personal journal. It contained meticulous records of Silas's illegal transactions, written in Arthur's own hand before his sudden, suspicious death. "This is what they were looking for," Jane whispered. "Arthur knew what his brother was doing, and Silas killed him to keep it quiet. They exiled me because they thought I had the ledger."

Before Thomas could examine the book, the sound of heavy footsteps crunched on the snow outside. A loud, violent knock shook the heavy oak door. Through the frosted window pane, Thomas saw the unmistakable silhouette of Silas, accompanied by three hired guns, their rifles held at the ready.
"Open the door, Sheriff!" Silas shouted, his voice muffled by the wind. "We know you have the widow. Hand her over, and we can all pretend this was just a misunderstanding."
Thomas turned to Jane, his face hardening into an expression of grim determination. He pointed toward the small trapdoor leading to the root cellar beneath the floorboards. "Get down there and stay quiet," he whispered urgently. "No matter what happens, do not let them find that journal." Jane scrambled into the dark cellar just as the front door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.
