I Voluntarily Went To Prison To Expose My Sister's Killer—Then Her Bully Cornered Me
Previously: When Clara entered the state penitentiary, she had one goal: find out what really happened to her sister. But when the prison's most feared inmate demanded her shoes, Clara's dangerous game began.
The Midnight Trap
Brenda let go of my collar with a rough shove, spitting on the dusty ground before turning her back on me. The yard slowly returned to its chaotic rhythm, but the warning had been delivered. I knew that by refusing her, I had painted a massive target on my back. But that was exactly what I wanted. I needed Brenda to feel threatened enough to make a mistake.
The mistake came sooner than I anticipated. Later that night, long after the lights-out siren had blared, the heavy silence of the cellblock was shattered by a strange sound. It wasn't the usual guard patrol; it was the distinct, electronic click of my cell door unlocking. During a scheduled midnight lockdown, this was impossible—unless someone in the control booth had been paid off.

The heavy iron door slid open slowly, revealing three dark figures standing in the corridor. At the front was Brenda, her face illuminated by the dim moonlight filtering through the high corridor windows. In her right hand, she held a crude, sharpened metal shank. The blade caught the light, gleaming with a deadly promise.
She stepped inside, her two loyal followers blocking the doorway behind her.
"You think you're clever, Clara?"Brenda sneered, her voice a low whisper that echoed off the concrete walls.
"Your sister thought she was clever too, before she took her little trip off the upper tier."
Hearing her confess so casually to Lily’s murder made my blood run cold, but it also filled me with a burning rage. She had admitted it. The administrative cover-up, the ruled suicide—it was all a lie. Brenda had pushed my sister to her death. Now, she stepped closer, pressing the cold, sharp point of the shank directly against my throat.
"Now, give me the shoes, or I'll make sure you join her tonight,"she whispered.
