Previously: When Clara entered the state penitentiary, she had one goal: find out what really happened to her sister. But when the prison's most feared inmate demanded her shoes, Clara's dangerous game began.

Justice for Lily

I didn't blink as the sharp metal pressed against my skin. Instead, I let out a soft, cold laugh that caught Brenda completely off guard.

"You should have looked closer at the shoes, Brenda,"
I whispered, my voice steady despite the blade at my throat.

Before Brenda could react, the blinding floodlights of the cellblock suddenly flickered to life, bathing the entire room in brilliant, white light. A loud, piercing siren began to wail, and the sound of heavy tactical boots echoed down the corridor.

"State police! Nobody move! Drop the weapon!"
a voice boomed through a megaphone.

Brenda froze, her eyes widening in sheer panic as a dozen armed officers and the prison Warden himself stormed into the cell, weapons drawn. Brenda’s accomplices immediately threw their hands in the air, dropping to their knees. A senior officer forced Brenda to the ground, kicking the shank away and securing her hands in heavy zip-ties.

Warden Vance stepped forward, looking down at Brenda with utter disgust. From the collar of my prison shirt, I pulled out a tiny, high-grade wireless microphone that had been broadcasting every single word of Brenda’s confession directly to the Warden's surveillance team. We had suspected that a corrupt night guard was facilitating Brenda's violence, and tonight, we caught both of them red-handed.

As they dragged Brenda away, she screamed curses at me, realizing she was now facing a lifetime sentence in maximum security for first-degree murder. I sank to the floor, clutching Lily's red sneakers to my chest as tears of relief finally streamed down my face. The system had failed my sister, but I had not. True justice isn't about revenge; it is about bringing the truth into the light, no matter how dark the road to get there.

The End
